Lets get "High"!!!
Lets get "High"!!!
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsInstance One - I had fallen ill once when I was 8. My father accosted a doctor to write a prescription for me. My mother got medicines for me. And when I got well, I, very innocently, asked my mother, " Where did you get the medicine from?" She, very nonchalantly, replied, " From the drug's store". I was shocked and I inquired myself - Was I on drugs for all these days?

Instance Two - When I went to the boarding school in the hills, I knew that a whole new world is opening up. There was a surprise in store for me - not only was I to find all of us geographically higher but was also to find some students "higher" than usual. It was quite shocking to find young boys and girls doing drugs -both soft and hard. The reasons were numerous and the sources as varied.

Instance Three- When I grew up and went to college in Delhi, I was quite alone. So were all other hostellers. Some read books; some listened to music. And some doped. They were the ones who listened to heavy metal, were well read and played the guitar. And they were the "in" gang. Everyone wanted to be a part of that gang - be it the sober boy from Kolkata hailing from a middle class family or the rich and affluent guy from a boarding school somewhere in UP.

Instance Four - When I started working soon after my college in Delhi, I got a nice set of colleagues. Not that they were not rude and lazy but most of them were clean. Until I realized that they do not do it openly - they do not let people in the office know about what they do after office hours. Why, I asked one of them. Pat came the reply; " It's a simple question of mind over matter!!!"

Instance Five - I started seeing a girl. We went to a lot of pubs and discs. Often, I used to see young girls and boys snorting and smoking up. By now, I had started ignoring such trivial "happenings" around me. I dated the girl for three years - and then suddenly, one fine day she started feeling dizzy and was hospitalized. The doctors told me it was not OD - it was too many years into drugs.

I am not trying to weave a story out of my experiences. But all through this short journey of mine, I have always tried to rationalize the reason behind doing drugs - be it the "harmless" grass or the "naughty" E - the reasons always seemed to converge - to be noticed. Some say they do it just for the heck of it; some complain that without the drugs, their life is quite miserable. Some do it for fun; some do it while aping others. Some do it to get the feel of the music; some do it to beat the cold. Some do it to stay calm; some do it to get active.

Freud had once said that there is just one basic reason for all human emotions - Sex. Similarly, the reasons to do drugs may be plethora but the basic reason of all reasons is nothing but attention. I am not trying to make an arbit point - I am speaking from my experience - armed with some primary and secondary research - the whole idea behind doing drugs is get attention and be noticed.

While I type this, I see Kurt Cobain's poster on my desktop disappear into oblivion. Maybe divine coincidence!!!
