THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two days after calling Jesus Christ ‘a liberation warrior’ who took on the mighty Roman empire, the CPM fell into a controversy by personifying Him as US President Barack Obama, the biggest apostle of capitalism and imperialism which drew flak from all political parties, including LDF partners. “This is an unwanted controversy hurting the sentiments of the believers. Portraying Jesus as a liberator was a right step forward as all Communists regard Him as one. But this will not help the movement politically,” CPI state secretary C K Chandrappan said.“It is good that if Pinarayi disowned the flex board,” he told Express.KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala described it as ridiculous. “They have portrayed Last Supper in a repulsive manner,” he said.“It shows the degeneration of the CPM,” said Muslim League general Secretary K P A Majeed.“It cannot be seen as an act without the knowledge of the leadership. Pinarayi Vijayan disowned it only after it backtracked,” Socialist Janata (Democratic) state president M P Veerendra Kumar said.“Christianity is a noble philosophy which should not be used for cheap and dirty political gains,” he added.“This shows the real fascist face of the party and its frantic attempt to woo the sections that keep away from it,” Government Chief Whip P C George said.Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan dismissed it as a ‘non-issue’. “The party has no intention to malign Jesus Christ or Christianity,” he clarified.
