Campaigning for first phase of UP polls end on Thursday, top leaders of all parties give their best.

New Delhi: Top politicians on Wednesday gave their best in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh which go to polls on April 7 and where campaigning will end on Thursday.

Film stars, party workers and famous leaders from outside UP campaigned in 62 constituencies where elections would be held for the first phase.

SP chief and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, BJP leaders Kalyan Singh and Narendra Modi and VHP President Ashok Singhal were some of the famous leaders toured many constituencies today.

Mulayam, who is fighting elections in Bharthana, held a rally in Etawah where he claimed that the SP had the most for the state’s development and accused BSP, BJP and Congress of teaming up to "uproot" him.

Barring BSP, which has had to rely on the crowd-pulling power of its president Mayawati, the major political parties have raked in star campaigners to garner votes for them.

The BJP roped in film actress Hema Malini and former cricketer Navjot Singh Siddhu besides party President Rajnath Singh and chief ministerial candidate Kalyan Singh.

Film stars Jaya Bachhan and Jaya Prada sought votes for the SP along with Yadav and Amar Singh, while party President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul were the Congress main draw.

Accompanied by a police motorcade, Rahul took out roadshows in Agra district, giving the personal touch by shaking hands with slogan-shouting men and women.

Modi addressed the biggest election rally of the BJP in the city of the Taj, saying he hung his head in shame seeing the "pitiable condition" of the state blessed with abundant resources" due to the "misrule" of Yadav and UP.

Accusing both the Yadav and Mayawati governments of "utmost corruption", Kalyan Singh said in Etah that the BJP was the only answer to the problems facing the state.

In Ayodhya, Singhal said the VHP had taken a resolve to ensure that Kalyan Singh became the chief minister with "the Hindus having full faith in him" as he was in power when the "disputed structure (Babri masjid) was brought down".
