KOZHIKODE: They are yet to be released fully across Kerala but nutmeg pickles developed by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Peruvannamuzhi have become a rage in Germany. The pickles are currently being distributed by Kudumbashree groups in rural areas close to the centre. “A relative of a farmer who resides here came to visit him from Germany and took a few jars of the pickles with him when he left. There his neighbours and friends loved it so much that he left with an even larger cargo of nutmeg pickles when he came to visit the next time,” said A Deepthi, Home Science subject matter specialist at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The pickles were developed as part of a programme by the IISR that aimed to introduce products made of nutmeg pericarp in the market. The institute has been conducting pioneering studies on nutmeg over the years and has helped local farmers cultivate the fruit successfully. A wide array of edible nutmeg products including squashes, wines and chutneys have been developed by the institute but it is the pickle that is available for immediate distribution.Priced rather affordably at just Rs. 15 for 100 gm, the pickles have a shelf life of more than six months. The institute plans to introduce the rest of the products gradually, depending upon the success of the pickles.
