THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cashing in on the season’s flavour, the Kudumbashree is all set to hold 1,165 special festival trade expos across the state, which would line up as many as 42,000 Kudumbashree enterprises.The fairs are being held from Thursday to September 8 and the first in the series was launched in Kannur on Thursday."In the last three years, the number of Onam fairs has increased three times and made a significant growth in the turnover too. The fairs will last from three days to one week and the women entrepreneurs under Kudumbashree fold will make a strong presence in the markets during the season,” said Kudumbashree Executive Director Sarada Muraleedharan in a press statement here.Apart from the fairs at various levels, Kudumbashree is also setting up special pavilions at the State-level Onam celebrations by the Tourism Department at Durbar Grounds, Ernakulam and Kanakakunnu, Thiruvananthapuram.Dedicated stalls for cashew nuts, honey, pickles, sweetened rice and textiles will be added attractions this year, she said.At the district-level, as many as 22 fairs will be organised. Five fairs in Kannur, three in Thiruvananthapuram, two each in Ernakulam and Malappuram will be held apart from one each in all other district head quarters.A total of 120 fetes will be held at thaluk, block, and municipal-levels while 1,023 expos will be held at the panchayat-levels.Ernakulam district will have the maximum number of panchayat-level Onam fairs with 108, followed by Thrissur (100), Malappuram (99), and Kannur (92). Wayanad has the lowest number of 21, while Idukki (47) and Kasargod (41) will have good representation.Community Development Societies and grama panchayats are jointly organising the fairs, showcasing the products from the respective panchayats, the statement said.Cultural performances, sports and arts competitions for the members of Kudumbashree neighbourhood groups and Balasabhas will add festive colours to the trade fairs that will bring together unique and successful ethnic food and consumer products from various places.Eggs, milk products, meat products, different flours, ready-mix masalas, papad, juices and creams, pickles, jams, nutrients, handicrafts, household items, furniture, jewellery, herbal products, ready-made dresses, bags, footwear and ethnic food items will be available at the fairs.The Kudumbashree units will also showcase their successful models for waste management, lab tests, IT ventures, tailoring and cooking at these expos.
