Tirunelveli: People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator SP Udhayakumar on Saturday expressed reservations on engaging in talks with former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).
"Regarding the Kudankulam plant, we would not speak with Kalam," Udhayakumar said during a demonstration staged by the movement in the city.
On Kalam's plan to meet the protestors on Sunday, Udhayakumar said they would heartily welcome him as the former president, a senior citizen, and a Tamil. "But in connection with the Kudankulam plant, we would not speak with him," he stated.
Thiruvalluvar Kazhagam president Professor Arivarasan led the protest, held near the Palayamkottai bus stand. In support of the people on relay fast at Idinthakarai, the protestors raised slogans against the KKNPP.
Participating in the agitation, Palayamkottai RC Diocese Bishop A Jude Paulraj stated that it was not a Christian struggle but one to safeguard the society.
"It should not be looked at from a religious angle. All sections of people are participating in the protest," he said.
Speaking to reporters, Udhayakumar said a protest demonstration would be staged in Villupuram district on November 8. The next day, a similar protest would be held at Puducherry.
Quoting the KKNPP officials who said the spent fuel would be reprocessed and used in the units, Udhayakumar sought to know if any plant for reprocessing fuel was functioning on the KKNPP premises.
"Recycling the spent fuel is 1,000 times dangerous than a nuclear reactor," he added.
