HYDERABAD: Konda Surekha, Congress MLA from Parakala in Warangal district and strong supporter of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has decided not to associate with the YSR Congress and to seek reelection to the Assembly as an independent candidate on the Telangana plank in the event of a bypoll.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Surekha said the YSRC had not yet been allotted a permanent symbol and she would contest the bypoll only on the Telangana plank. She ruled out any secret understanding between the TRS and the YSRC.She alleged that the TRS failed to expose the Congress and its chief Sonia Gandhi on the Telangana issue. She said the TRS was raising the Telangana demand and conducting the movement only to expand its political base and amass wealth, she alleged. the Telangana demand was not a patent of TRS and everyone had the right to fight for the region. She said she had resigned from the Assembly in response to the call given by the TJAC and voted against the Kiran government on the noconfidence motion for the same reason. At a time when several Telangana leaders like Boda Janardhan and Komaram Bheem's grandson Sone Rao are joining the YSRC, Konda Surekha's decision not to be seen as a Jagan camper is surprising.

Surekha was the lone MLA from Telangana to have voted against the Kiran Kumar Reddy government on the noconfidence motion in the Assembly on December 5. She, along with 15 Congress MLAs, is facing disqualification petition filed by the Congress with the speaker.

Surekha seems to be thinking that Assembly speaker N Manohar has come to a decision on the disqualification/resignation issue, and that a byeelection in her constituency was imminent. She must be thinking that it will be prudent for her to contest the election on the Telangana plank. As Jagan has not announced a clearcut stand on Telangana, it will take some time for him to enter the region to do canvassing. Besides, several Telangana forces including the TRS and TJAC are still opposed to Jagan. Moreover, the TRS has decided to field its own candidate in Parakala. Considering all these factors, Surekha has decided to temporarily break her political relations with YSRC and espouse the Telangana cause more vigorously.
