Bengaluru: It is going to be a cracker-less Karaga in 2016. After the unfortunate temple tragedy in Kerala in which over 100 people have died, the organisers of the annual Bengaluru Karaga have decided not to burst any crackers this year for the festival.

Every year, crackers worth over Rs 1 lakh are burnt in the festival. However, for the first time in the over 500 years, no crackers will be used on Karaga in 2016. Fireworks were supposed to be used on April 19, the day of Karaga. Since the procession passes through densely populated old Bengaluru in the night, organisers have decided not burst crackers.

It is one of the oldest community festivals in the city. Karaga festival depicts the rich cultural and religious heritage of Karnataka. It takes place in the night and is celebrated in honour of the Goddess Shakti. The festival is held at the famous Dharmarayaswamy temple in old Bengaluru.

The festival begins on the full moon day of Chaitra and last for 9 days. It derives its name from an earthen pot in which the Goddess Shakti is invoked. The highlight of the festival is a grand procession that is held in honour of Goddess Shakti on the full moon night.
