Kerala government rules out human trafficking in state orphanages
Over 500 children were brought to Kerala from various eastern states to be taken to various orphanages in the southern state.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala orphanage control board has ruled out allegations of human trafficking in bringing children from eastern states to the orphanages in Kerala.

In a statement issued by the board Chairman P C Ibrahim Master, he stated the incident in which about 455 children were brought to Kozhikode Mukkam Muslim Orphonage on May 24 and 123 children to Malppuram Anwarul Huda Orphanage on May 25, cannot be considered as human trafficking as many children have been returned to the concerned orphanages.

The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) will not be willing to transfer the victim to the exploiter themselves.

The statement also said that various agencies have wrongfully interpreted the requirement of relevant documents in this issue. According to the amendment made to the orphanages and other Charitable Homes (Supervision and Control) Act 1960, the documents include a list of children, their identification and a recommendation letter from the state government concerned but not specifying which authority under the state government concerned.

In the issue of children brought in from other states there are some reports that the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development is not happy with the way the state government is communicating with it on the issue. It seems that the records asked for have not been provided by the state government.
