Kerala: Achuthanandan opposes more taxes to make up for losses after liquor ban
The Cabinet had on Wednesday decided to increase taxes on liquor, cigarettes, water charges and fees for various services.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala opposition leader VS Achuthanandan has come down heavily at the state Cabinet's decision to impose additional taxes. In a press statement he said that that a session of the Legislative Assembly has to be called immediately to discuss the proposal where the government through an order is aiming at an additional tax of Rs 2012 crore.

The Cabinet had on Wednesday decided to increase the taxes on liquor, cigarettes, water charges and fees for various services. The tax on wine and beer would go from 50 per cent to 70 per cent.

Achuthanandan said that it is the first time such a huge amount is imposed on the people as taxes through government order.

"People are not bound to pay these taxes which do not have the approval of the Legislative Assembly," he said.

He also said that according to the government the revenue from liquor has not reduced and no new projects are implemented which is not in the plan and then how did the state end up in such a huge financial crisis.
