KOLLAM: Five persons were killed as the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore Maveli Express rammed into a mini-lorry at an unmanned level-crossing at Thayyil Mukku, near Oachira,on Saturday.The incident took place around 9.20 pm when the mini-lorry reportedly drove onto the rail track without noticing the approaching train. The dead include one Malayali and four Bengalis. The mini-lorry plunged into the nearby pool under the impact of the collision.Three bodies were recovered from the track and the remaining two from the pool.
Among those identified are Oachira native Kochayyathu Veettil Sasidharan Pillai, 55, and Anil Mande from Bengal. Santhosh, 32, also hailing from Oachira, was seriously injured and has been admitted to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.The passengers of the mini-lorry are said to be construction workers employed in Kollam. Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal reached the spot and led the rescue operations.The rail traffic was halted for almost an hour following the accident. The traffic was, however, restored by 11 pm.
