TIRUNELVELI: The district secretary of the Tirunelveli unit of the DMK Karuppasamy Pandian and his brother Sankarasubbu were arrested by the anti-land grabbing wing of Tirunelveli District Crime Branch on charges of land grabbing on  Saturday. The arrest was made on charges of an alleged land grabbing incident that happened in 2007 when Sankarasubbu bought three acres of land at Naduvakurichi, near here, from one Nallathiyan and transferred it to his daughter Sundari.ADSP Chockalingam and DSP Pandiarajan along with a huge posse of police force went to Karuppasamy Pandian’s house and arrested the brothers. It may be noted that Nallathiyan was not the rightful owner for this disputed property as he only had claims on it.Around 6 acres (which includes the 3-acre land that was grabbed) at Naduvakurichi is at present in possession of one Kombiah, a former cooperative society employee, police sources said. There was a dispute regarding this 6-acre land in 1976 between Kombiah and the cooperative society. The matter was settled in favour of Kombiah by the court the same year ex parte, as the cooperative society did not represent the case, following which he been paying the land tax and fulfilling other formalities since 1992. Kombiah, subsequently, transferred the land to his sons Saravanan and Senthil Kumar.Meanwhile, Nallathiyan laid claim to this disputed property saying that it had been his grandfather’s ancestral property since 1918.Though Nallathiyan was not the rightful owner, Sankarasubbu bought the land using forged documents and was said to have threatened Kombiah once in 2007. Though Kombiah was said to have lodged a complaint during the DMK regime, no action was taken. The anti-land grabbing wing, which was formed after the AIADMK came to power, swung into action after receiving the complaint. Cases under section 465 (Punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) were registered by the police. They were produced before Judicial Magistrate Palpandian, who remanded them in judicial custody till September 23 and ordered that they be produced before Judicial Magistrate-I court in Tirunelveli on September 23. While Karuppasamy Pandian was taken to the Central Prison at Madurai, Sankarasubbu was lodged at the Central Prison in Palayamkottai.
