Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK supremo K Karunanidhi on Sunday wrote to the Tamil Nadu government urging it to file for a review of the Supreme Court's order banning the centuries-old Jallikattu bull-fight in the state.
In a statement, the veteran leader asked the Jayalalithaa government to respect everyone's feeling and ensure that the traditional bull-fight continues in the state.
Tamil heritage should be saved and everyone's feelings must be respected, he said.
A bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose on May 7 asked the centre to amend the law on preventing cruelty to animals to bring bulls within its ambit.
The court also struck down a 2011 Tamil Nadu law regulating the conduct of Jallikattu.
The law provided for conducting Jallikattu from January to May in various places in Tamil Nadu to ensure the protection of not only the participants but also of the spectators.
Karunanidhi in his statement, also wrote, "The state should keep in mind the law and order issues if a blockade is imposed on Jallikattu."
