BANGALORE: Even as the Bengaluru Habba is enthralling the audience with its rich cultural presentations, the three-day street play festival beginning on Friday is set to provide a feast for theatre lovers this weekend at Malleswaram.Jointly organised by Avishkara, a progressive cultural forum, and All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO), the 16th theatre festival is staging eight different plays with themes ranging from Goruru Ramaswamy Aiyangar’s satire on the present day courts, Courtenalli Gedda Kudure and Matte Matte Shakuntala, a play sensitising on gender issues by using the plot of Kalidasa’s Shankuntala. The festival is showcasing Kailasammu Poli Kittinu based on the well known Poli Kitti play by T P Kailasam, Mannada Mannina Makkalu is based on farmer suicides and their problems while Bharatha Khanda Darshana depicts the vertical divide between the haves and have-nots in the country. The street festival this year is dedicated to the Centenary of Navodaya of Kannada literature that started with the translation of English poems titled English Geethegalu by late BM Shreekantaiah in 1911. The festival is from January 20 to 22.
