Kalyan Metro Route Set for Major Changes as CM Shinde Orders New Development Plan
Local traders, citizens, and experts have raised concerns over the project, particularly regarding the potential disruption to business activities along the proposed path

In a significant development that could reshape public transportation in the Kalyan region, both the Centre and state governments are revisiting plans for the proposed Kalyan Metro project. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to prepare a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) to reflect these changes.

The Kalyan Metro project, which has been in the works since 2017, is part of a broader initiative to improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. However, concerns about the feasibility of the current route have prompted a reconsideration. Local traders, citizens, and experts have raised concerns, particularly regarding the potential disruption to business activities along the proposed path.

A committee formed by the chief minister has indicated that the current Metro route, which was expected to benefit Kalyan residents by connecting them directly to major city centres, might need to be re-evaluated. Alternative routes are now being discussed, which could provide better access while minimising disruptions.

Since the Metro project’s inception in December 2018, efforts have been ongoing to finalise a route that balances the need for urban development with the realities of the existing cityscape. While the current DPR laid out the foundational plans for the metro system, including its routes and expected stations, it appears that further adjustments are necessary to optimise the project’s impact.

The Kalyan-Dombivli region, known for its dense population and bustling markets, is one of the key areas expected to benefit from the proposed metro line. The current plan includes extending Metro service to these areas, aiming to ease the burden on the overcrowded suburban train system. However, with the ongoing discussions about rerouting, the future of this extension is now uncertain.

The changes being considered are not just technical adjustments but are a response to broader public concerns. The government is keen to ensure that the project does not negatively impact local businesses or daily commuters, who are already grappling with the limitations of the existing infrastructure. The Chief Minister’s Office has assured citizens that their voices will be heard before finalising the new DPR.

As Kalyan moves towards modernisation, the Metro project is seen as a critical part of its urban infrastructure development, promising better connectivity and reduced travel times. However, achieving these goals will require a thoughtful approach that balances progress with community needs.
