"BJP-led Opposition's only aim is to create suspicion in the minds of people about the Congress government."

Mumbai: Congress in Maharashtra on Thursday said Opposition demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G spectrum and CWG scams was a "tool to defame the government and play politics".

BJP-led Opposition's only aim is to create suspicion in the minds of people about the Congress government. The JPC demand was a "tool to defame the government and play politics," Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman

Anant Gadgil told reporters in Mumbai.

He said JPCs in the past have not been able to establish truth. Citing an example, he said such a probe panel, in which his father late VN Gadgil, then a Union Minister, was a member, had failed to yield result in the multi-crore Bofors scam.

The JPC probe suffers from some shortcomings as it does not get the required documentary evidence as well as appropriate witnesses, he said, adding there are restrictions on functioning of the committee.

"Also, all its members are not necessary from legal background," Gadgil added.
