New Delhi: Delhi's BJP MLA OP Sharma was caught on camera assaulting an unidentified person, while lawyers attacked journalists as well as JNU students and teachers at Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday.
When CNN-IBN asked him about it, Sharma first said he was trying to reason with people shouting "Pakistan Zindabad" slogans, but then justified the violence.
"If you ask me, there is nothing wrong in beating up or even killing someone shouting slogans in favour of Pakistan," he said.
The MLA said he and his supporters were at the court in connection with the hearing in the defamation case filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
He claimed he had gone to "reason" with people who were shouting slogans in favour of Pakistan and that they turned violent.
In the scuffle that followed, Sharma also sustained minor injuries on his head. A PTI report identified the man who was beaten up as CPI activist Ameeque Jamai.
Inside the court premises, Delhi Police stood as mute witnesses as lawyers attacked journalists and also students and teachers of JNU who had reached there for the bail hearing of student leader Kanhaiya Kumar .
The lawyers shouted pro-India and anti-JNU slogans, and then got into a scuffle with the students.
IBN7 reporter Amit Pande was injured after being beaten up by the lawyers, while CNN-IBN's Meenakshi Upreti was dragged out of the court room along with some other journalists.
JNU students alleged the lawyers were affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the police did nothing when they went on a rampage.
