Srinagar: Protests broke out in Srinagar after a youth was killed in fresh clashes with security forces in Shopian in Kashmir, where CRPF firing on Saturday had claimed four lives.

Curfew has been re-imposed in Shopian even as separatist leaders called for a Kashmir band.

Rafiq Ahmad Rather was killed when CRPF personnel allegedly opened fire to disperse protestors outside their camp at Gagran village, 52 km from Srinagar. A large number of people had assembled outside the camp to protest the killing of four persons, including three local youth, by CRPF troopers last Saturday.

Soon after the death of Rather, the protestors went on the rampage and set ablaze the official residence of a senior officer in the town. Curfew was reimposed in the south Kashmir town on Sunday following widespread clashes between security forces and agitated residents.

Earlier violence broke out following the killing of four people in CRPF firing. The CRPF maintains they were trying to attack their camp, though preliminary investigations show at least three were locals with no prior record.
