CHENNAI: The AIADMK party’s nominee for the Deputy Mayorship in Chennai Corporation, Benjamin, was elected unopposed to the post on Saturday.When the council met for the election of the Deputy Mayor, Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan asked the contestants to submit their applications for the post in the prescribed format.As Benjamin’s name has been already nominated for the post by AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa, he submitted his application with the Commissioner after seeking blessings from all AIADMK councillors.While most of the councillors, including women, greeted him with a gentle handshake, AIADMK’s senior member in the House Sukumar Babu hugged him to show his support to him.As the time allotted for filing nominations and withdrawal ended, Karthikeyan declared Benjamin elected unopposed as the new Deputy Mayor of the Corporation and asked him to take his chair.Following the decades-old tradition, Mayor Duraisamy and Commissioner escorted Benjamin to his new seat.While the whole House was echoing with slogans in praise of Jayalalithaa, there were two pairs of eyes shedding tears of joy at the visitors’ gallery--Benjamin’s wife Sheela and his second son Samson Paul studying class twelve in a private school in Mogappair.Later speaking to Express, Sheela said it was God’s grace and Amma’s blessings that gave her husband the prestigious post.
