Kathmandu: The draft interim constitution of Nepal was submitted to the peace talks teams of the government and the Maoists on Friday by a committee which had been assigned the task of preparing it.
The 76-page draft was handed over to chief government negotiatior Krishna Prasad Sitaula and leader of Maoist talks team Krishna Bahadur Mahara at the office of the Interim
Constitution Drafting Committee (ICDC), which was formed more than two months ago.
Representatives of both the talks teams were present on the occasion.
The interim constitution will substitute the present 1990 Constitution and will remain effective until a new Constitution is promulgated through the Constituent Assembly election scheduled for mid-April.
However, some key political issues remain to be settled in the draft, without which it will remain incomplete.
The major differences remain on the position of the monarchy in the constitution.
A final shape would be given to the draft constitution by the Seven Party Alliance and the Maoists after sorting out differences over key issues.
Speaking at the hand-over ceremony, coordinator of draft team Laxma Prasad Aryal said this constitution has been prepared only for the transitional period.
