Indian fisherman escapes from Pakistan jail: Reports
India and Pakistan arrest dozens of fishermen every year on charges of violating the maritime boundary.

Islamabad: An Indian fisherman has escaped from a jail in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi, according to media reports on February 12. The fisherman, identified by the media as Kishore, escaped while cleaning the main gate of Landhi Jail in Karachi on February 11.

Two prison officials were suspended after the escape. Sindh Minister for Prisons Manzoor Wassan ordered an inquiry into the incident and sought a report from the jail's administration.

Kishore was among a group of Indian fishermen who were recently arrested by the Maritime Security Agency for allegedly entering Pakistan s exclusive economic zone. Jail Superintendent Nazeer Shah said Kishore was brought to the prison on January 29.

Former judge Nasir Aslam Zahid, who heads the NGO Legal Aid Office, told the media it was unheard of for an Indian fisherman to escape from a Pakistani prison.

India and Pakistan arrest dozens of fishermen every year on charges of violating the maritime boundary. In recent years, the two countries have taken several steps to speed up the release of the fishermen.
