The Indian decision to continue deployment follows an extension for the Chapter Six Role, which provides for passive peacekeeping.

New Delhi: The Indian Army will continue peacekeeping operations in Lebanon till February 2007.

This follows the extension of the UN peacekeeping mandate in Lebanon.

India has been wary of any peace enforcement role, which could involve forcibly disarming the Hezbollah.

The Indian decision to continue deployment follows an extension for the Chapter Six Role, which provides for passive peacekeeping.

The 4th battalion of the Sikh Regiment, which is currently deployed along the Blue Line in Lebanon, was commended by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan last week.
