New Delhi: Security is on an all-time high and police patrols are on at all state borders and national highways as India celebrates its 57th Republic Day.

Major airports across the country are on high alert and all borders leading to New Delhi are being manned by a contingent of police.

Vehicles coming from adjoining areas like Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurgaon were being subjected to extensive searches.

Similar is the situation across the country and in Jammu and Kashmir, even women are being frisked - the first time ever - as an extended security measure.

Security measures have been tightened in all the Eastern and North Eastern states in view of the strike and boycott calls by different rebel groups and Naxals.

Official sources said a special alert had been sounded for the states sharing border with Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

The sources said special alert was sounded following recent intelligence reports that the ISI had coordinated a meeting among some fundamentalist groups and the Indian rebel outfits in Bangladesh to spearhead subversive activities in India.

Security has been specially tightened for Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, the chief guest for the celebrations, who is on the watch list due to threats to his life from several terrorist organisations, including the Al-Qaida.

On Wednesday, the Delhi Police foiled what is being describes as a terror plan when they arrested two Bangladeshi nationals with a large cache of explosives.

Intelligence agencies had picked up a lot of "terror chatter" in adjoining areas of Delhi prompting extra precaution by the security forces, police sources said.

The Capital is, meanwhile, gearing up for celebrations.

President Kalam will take the guard of honour in New Delhi and the colourful tableaux from various states will display the culture and tradition of the respective states.
