New Delhi: In a cleverly worded statement on Tuesday, India reiterated its stand on third party mediation in the Kashmir issue saying, "Government's position for bilateral redressal of all India-Pakistan issues in an environment free of terror and violence hasn't changed."

But at the same time, New Delhi did not rebuff the offer made by the US. In fact, it took the opportunity to urge the international community to "enforce international mechanisms and mandates concerning terrorism emanating from Pakistan, which continues to be the single biggest threat to peace and stability in our region and beyond."

In August 2014, the Government had called off secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan after Pakistan High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit had engaged with separatist leaders ahead of the dialogue.

India had categorically stated that the only two stakeholders on the Kashmir issue are the two countries and rejected any other entity as a third party. That red line, however, was blurred subsequently.
