CHENNAI: Human waste dropping from the moving express train toilets has turned out to be a major inconvenience for motorists at the railway subways in Perambur and Ganeshapuram. Having been splashed with human excreta at these points on their way to office, they feel uneasy to take the subways when trains cross. The reason: there is no cover under the tracks to prevent such occurrences. They have been demanding construction of a thin concrete layer or a steel sheet beneath the bridge so as to avoid the inconvenience.Whenever trains pass Perambur and Ganeshapuram railway over bridges, the motorists halt their vehicles at least 50 feet away on both sides of the subways that result in traffic congestion during the peak hours. It is a daily scene there as motorists try avoiding the human wastes and toilet water dropping from moving trains. Even though motorists stop vehicles at a considerable distance away from the subways, sometimes they cannot escape from toilet water that gets sprayed through the air.It became habit of the commuters of Perambur Paper Mills Road and Ambedkar College Road to halt their vehicles few meters off the bridge whenever they see trains passing by. “This problem is there for several years. School going children, office-goers are facing annoyance because of this. Even some people who were already aware of the problem also sometimes crossed the bridge due to urgency and get splashed with dirty water and filth,” said KV Prasad, a guard of a two wheeler showroom at Perambur.This issue has irked commuters from Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Madhavaram, Moolakadai and Kodungaiyur who need to pass through Perambur railway subway to reach the southern parts of the city for work. Similarly, motorists travelling from Vyasarpadi towards Purasawalkam need to halt near Ganesapuram subway whenever trains pass over the bridge.“People who are travelling by cars face no problem here. It is only motorcyclists who are facing trouble while travelling through these railway subways. If toilet water falls on them, they have to return home and take bath again. This happened to me twice though I am aware of this. You cannot stop vehicle and wait for the train to cross over bridge when you are in hurry,” said Akbar, a mechanic.People of this area demand an immediate solution to this problem. They say that a simple metal sheet or a thin concrete slab underneath the tracks would do the trick.
