The addition of vibration will help those with auditory impairment become alert.

The young students of the nation are actively trying to come up with inventions to make lives easier. Students of a private school in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu have recently crafted a sensor-equipped shoe for the safety of visually impaired people, so that they can step out of their houses feeling more safe. Many visually impaired or those with hearing impairment have been a victim of accidents and often find it difficult to protect themselves. To alleviate their challenges, two friends studying in class 9, named Guru Prasad and Vishal came up with an idea. They decided to fit a sensor device in the shoes. The device is designed in a way to detect an obstacle within 30 cm and alert with a sound and vibration. The addition of vibration will help those with auditory impairment become alert.

The sensory shoe was invented for the 31st National Children’s Science Conference and was showcased at the Science Pavillion at a book festival in Thanjavur. The theme was Tools for the Blind. As a part of a field trip, the students visited a school for the blind, where they asked them to share the problems they faced. They faced challenges while travelling by bus, standing to take photos or figuring out that there was a person in front of them. The students decided to install a device in the show. They have installed a vibrate board, battery and an audio board. When walking with the shoe, it will detect an obstacle or object within a 30 cm distance and make a sound.

If the person is deaf, the shoes vibrate to alert them. In the future, they want to install the sensor in the shoe and also include a GPS device. This feature will help family members to monitor them from home. The detection distance can be adjusted up to 300 cm. The shoe can also be charged like a mobile phone. The cost of the shoe is currently Rs 700. Once it is fully developed, the students will request the government to provide it free of charge.
