The death of Dasara elephant Arjuna was grieved by countless animal enthusiasts throughout Karnataka. Arjuna, who was estimated to be around 64 years old, died while involved in an operation to relocate radio-collar rogue elephants that had been causing havoc in villages for months and had even resulted in farmer fatalities.
Arjuna’s death occurred during a confrontation with another tusker in December of last year. While Arjuna’s death is still mourned in the state, a similar-looking pachyderm sharing the same features as the deceased Arjuna has taken people by surprise.
The elephant has been found in the backwaters of the Kabini River. Arjuna’s fans are also calling this elephant a reincarnation of the slain elephant. This elephant was discovered in the Kabini backwater area near Belle Camp of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve in HD Kote taluk, where Arjuna resided.
During a safari, tourists spotted this elephant, who captivated them as a counterpart to the famous Dasara elephant Arjuna. Tourists took photos of the animal, which went viral and the elephant has now come to be known as ‘Junior Arjuna’. During the summer, a group of animals settle in the backwaters of Kabini. Elephants from various areas traverse the backwaters in quest of sustenance. Among them is ‘Junior Arjuna’, a member of the elephant herd.
Arjuna carried the Golden Howdah during the famous Mysore Dasara for years and was a celebrated elephant not only in Karnataka but also beyond. He died in a clash with a wild elephant during an elephant capture operation near Yeslur in Sakleshpur in December. The Forest Department had been executing the operation to capture troublesome tuskers in the Sakleshpur, Alur, Belur, and Yeslur ranges of Hassan. In the course of the operation, a wild tusker assaulted Arjuna, resulting in injuries to his abdomen, as per initial reports. This occurrence compelled the department to halt the operation.
