THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Set in Chile, ‘The Painting Lesson’ directed by Pablo Perelman turned the talk of the day on day four of 16th IFFK. The film, with its mind arresting frames and wonderful portrayal of emotions, was well received by the viewers.A wonderful narration method was adopted to perfectly connect solitude, hope and separation to the fullest. The film, for the second time was screened before a packed audience in the festival. Catherine Breillat’s ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, which wonderfully depicted a well-structured fairy tale, caught the attention of many film buffs. The film was shown at the Venice, Toronto and Rotterdam festivals. ‘Independencia’ in the ‘Philippine Cinema’ was set against the backdrop of the Spanish-American civil war in the early 20th century Philippines.The film tells the story of a fleeing mother and her son and the changes that happen in their life with the entry of a young woman.'Future Lasts Forever’, the 108-minute movie in the competition section was widely applauded by many for its thematic presentation. The film that centered around the journey of a musicologist is directed by Ozcan Alper.The day also had films from contemporary master in focus, country focus, DEFA films, best of FIPRESCI, Retrospectives of Bresson, Adolfas Mekas, Madhu, Masumura, Angelopoulos and Oshima.The Open Forum on Monday had a discussion on ‘African Cinema’. Wasis Diop, Laurence Gavron, Alexandra Speciale were present.
