CHENNAI: Shitanshu G Maurya’s ‘A Distinct Allegory’, an exhibition of 26 sculptures, reflects public art in precise. Implementing the principles of architecture and designing techniques, the artist has etched out elements that are usually ignored. His handpicked rudiments and emotions are visible throughout his series of works. “Many things happen in our lives without a fuss and my existing work is about the inadvertent upshots occurring in clay during processing procedures,” says Maurya, who is preoccupied with his new works. He wants you to choose the best and ignore the rest. He stresses the importance of specialty in viewers’ eyes that makes his art piece an ideal one.  The artist has used stoneware ceramics as a demand of subject, but concentrates in coil method and finger impressions. Other materials like steel, brass, copper, iron and acrylic fibre are included in his sculptures. Having a dislike towards glazed surfaces, he uses different coloured layers to make disconnections that give a real effect to his wood-fired sculptures. Maurya has completed his bachelor’s degree in fine arts and masters in ceramic pottery. The artist considers himself as a seed in the Indian art scenario and says, “I wish to do experiments with regard to medium, subject, thought and element. I’m in love with clay and want to break the barriers of ceramics that stop our view to vision the possibilities of utility wares.”Talking on the acceptance of his works, Maurya views that all live in a plastic age where everything depends on one’s comfort zone. Likewise, he connects people’s attitude to arts and says, “Some opine about the pros and cons of every medium; but each has its own unspecified beauty and respect. I abide by my heart.” His first sculptural work — , a three-piece composition of green glaze, shows a growth on a pot that resembles the neck of a vase. His second work, Sankul, a 12-piece composition of different size, shows a group of people marching towards a destination. Also, he started working on the Skyscraper series in which Maurya has shown two round barrels of 18-foot height with steps in a straight row from down to upwards and that proves his penchant for artistic- architectural sense. The artist has participated in international shows as well. Maurya thinks it is difficult to bring a constant flow in his work, as thinking process differs minute-to-minute. His art discoveries are based on the reflections of the quality that a medium possess. He believes in discussions and seminars for the betterment of artistic thinking. He notes, “Previously, people knew ceramic artist as a potter, but I use clay as a medium to build the body with inclusion of other necessary substances.” Also he’s working on environmental issues and hopes to transmit his views deeply to the common man.(The exhibition is on till August 31 at Apparao Galleries, Nungambakkam.
