Mumbai: The ripples of the Friday blast in Hyderabad’s Mecca Mosque were felt in Mumbai within hours of the tragic incident when a rampaging mob attacked some BEST buses at the Kurla bus terminal in the eastern suburb of the city.
The incident occurred at 1515 hours IST after the mob turned violent and barged into the terminal. They broke the windshields of seven buses parked inside the terminal. In the ensuing melee, a BEST driver sustained minor injuries, police sources said.
Additional security reinforcements have been rushed to the area and senior police officials are monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around the city in view of the blasts in Hyderabad.
The blast at Mecca mosque also sparked off anti-Pakistan protests in the holy city of Varanasi. While ruling BSP supporters burnt Pakistani flag, activists of Samajwadi Party burnt the effigy of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
Ruling BSP and Shahar Dakshini Sanghursh Samiti activists burnt the Pakistani flag outside the Sankatmochan temple and demanded that UPA government at Centre take stern action against those responsible for the blast at the historic Hyderabad mosque.
Led by BSP leader Sanjay Pandey, the activists claimed Pak-sponsored attempts of triggering terror at places of worship in India to break the country's secular fabric will never be successful.
Security has also been beefed up in all places of worships and other key installations in Chennai and Delhi in the wake of the Hyderabad blast.
Top Tamil Nadu police sources said devotees were being allowed into places of worship only after a thorough check with metal detectors.
The sources said persons moving about in suspiciously were being closely watched. Police patrolling has also been intensified throughout the city.
Meanwhile, railway sources said all trains to Andhra Pradesh were being thoroughly checked. The luggage of the passengers was also being checked.
A high alert has also been sounded in West Bengal. Senior police officials said the alert has also been sounded in some districts in view of the clashes between followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda and Sikhs in Punjab.
The alert has been sounded in Burdwan, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Kolkata and Darjeeling where Sikhs have strong presence, officials said.
