COIMBATORE: High drama was witnessed outside the Coimbatore Prison on Monday when lawyers representing jailed former Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam and a posse of policemen descended on the scene. Frayed tempers were witnessed outside the prison when lawyers, who were denied permission to meet their high profile client, raised slogans against the police. The protesting lawyers alleged that in spite of submitting several petitions to meet their client, the prison officials had refused to allow them in thereby denying them the rights enshrined in the prison manual. However, Coimbatore Central Prison Superintendent Murugesan said that the advocates were not allowed inside to avert a possible law and order problem. Prison authorities also denied having received bail orders to facilitate the release of Arumugam.
