Helmets made compulsary in Ahmedabad
Starting tomorrow, the people of Ahmedabad will have to wear helmets if they are driving a two-wheeler.

New Delhi: Twice in the past the city police announced wearing helmets would be made compulsory. But each time, the High Court pronounced stay orders. This time though, the police are intent on enforcing the compulsory helmet and seat belt law.

Vikas Sahay, deputy commissioner of traffic police, Ahmedabad said, "Wearing helmets and seat belts will be made compulsory from December 1. People's participation has been encouraging so far."

"The helmets will be compulsory for pillion riders too, but women pillion riders will be exempted."

Compulsory helmets means brisk sales for helmet shops, as well as the hundreds of roadside helmet joints that have suddenly sprung up all over the city.

However, people have different views. Shrikant Sanghvi, a buyer says, "It is all right to have helmets made compulsory on the highway, but there is no need to wear it within the city limits."

Another buyer, Devyani Sanghvi disagrees: "I am buying the helmet because it has been made compulsory, but I feel this is a good thing."

The traffic police have decided to impose a fine of Rs 50 on the offenders. However, it is still not very clear whether the people of Ahmedabad will actually buckle up and put their helmets on.

What's your reaction?
