New Delhi: Heavy firing between Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistani infiltrators was reported at the Indo-Pak border at Samba near Jammu on Friday.
In what is being seen as a serious setback to the confidence-building measures between the two countries, Pakistani infiltrators opened fire at BSF while trying to cut the fence and sneak in from Pakistan.
More than 500 rounds of firing — lasting over 10 minutes — took place.
375 empty rounds of AK 47 have been seized, the BSF confirmed.
BSF is viewing the matter with great seriousness and has lodged a protest note with the Pakistani counterpart for violation of peace along the international border.
No Indian casualties have been reported so far.
While BSF has ruled out the involvement of Pakistan army in the fire exchange, sources have told CNN-IBN that Pakistani rangers too fired back to facilitate the crossing over of the infiltrators to the country.
The BSF is, however, not describing the incident as a ceasefire violation.
There had been a lull on the Indo-Pak border ever since the fire exchange in 2003.
An alert has now been issued at the international border.
