As India braces for intense heat waves this summer, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is fully prepared to tackle the anticipated extreme summer by strategically establishing cold rooms throughout the city and ensuring the availability of heat-stroke medicines at their health facilities.
Apart from this, the BMC also informed that medicines to treat heat stokes have been made available in 103 of its Hindu Hridaysmrat Balasaheb Thackeray ‘Aapla Davakhana’ (public dispensaries) with air conditioners.
Heat Wave: How Are Mumbai Hospitals Being Prepared
“Fourteen major hospitals, general hospitals and medical colleges will have two beds each in the cold rooms set up for treating heat stroke patients. Medical officers and staffers have been trained for the control and prevention of heat stroke,” the release said.
The civic body has already released guidelines for control and prevention of heat stroke, it added.
“April and May are comparatively hotter and therefore, people are prone to heat stroke. The civic body is focusing on creating awareness about the precautions to be taken to avoid heat stroke,” the senior official said.
The BMC appealed to citizens to stay safe, and hydrated and avoid going out in the afternoon. A person suffering from a heat stroke should immediately be taken to hospital and asked people to increase their intake of water and other healthy fluids, the guidelines stated.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya this week said continuous efforts towards generating awareness are necessary for better management of heat waves and added effective addressing leads to effective management.
Mandaviya, who chaired a meeting to review public health preparedness for the management of heat-related illnesses, highlighted the importance of timely action as soon as India Meteorological Department (IMD) alerts are received in the states.
It was pointed out that heat action plans have been updated in 23 states while around 100 districts have campaigned on heatwave awareness generation.
India To Witness Extreme Heat Waves From April To June
India is likely to experience extreme heat during the April to June period with central and western peninsular parts facing the worst impact, the India Meteorological Department said.
The IMD chief said above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in the April-June period, with a high probability over central and western peninsular India.
Above-normal heatwave days are likely over most parts of the plains during the April-June period. Ten to 20 days of the heat wave are expected in different parts of the country against the normal of 4 to 8 days, he said.
Gujarat, central Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, north Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience the worst impact of heat waves, Mohapatra said.
