KOCHI: Expressing concern over the dumping of waste in public places, the Kerala High Court on Monday asked the Ernakulam District Collector, Kochi corporation and chairpersons of 11 municipalities in the district to appear before it on Thursday to explain their views on the management of waste. The court observed that the incidents of waste dumping in Kochi were still happening. “We feel that the police are not serious about the matter and that is why the court order has not served the purpose so far. We have noticed that waste is still being thrown on roadsides and also on to vacant lands in Kochi,” the court observed after considering the compliance report submitted by the government pleader. The court also directed the DGP to instruct police officers to deploy more men for night patrol to book violators and prosecute them.Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice P S Gopinathan issued the order on a petition filed by the Kerala Federation of Women Lawyers seeking a directive to the government to prevent dumping of waste at public places. The court had earlier prohibited dumping of waste in plastic carry bags or bags made of any other non-biodegradable material in public places or roadsides and ordered the police to prosecute those who violated the order. After the order, two women had approached the court stating that the municipalities had not made any arrangements for collecting waste from houses. They had not provided waste bins on roadsides or any other place.
