When was the last time you remember seeing Kirron Kher in a non-Punjabi role that made an impact? Perhaps Paro's mother Sumitra in 'Devdas', isn't it? The veteran actress is the new-age mother and has certainly found a niche where she fits into this particular witty and loud Punjabi mother who sounds funny in whatever she says.
Kirron's role in Sonam Kapoor's 'Khoobsurat' is quite similar to her previous roles in movies like 'Total Siyaapa' or 'Dostana' where she is seen hamming it completely. No doubt she is very convincing as a Punjabi mom and no one else can do justice do her roles. But are we happy seeing her in the same type of role again and again?
She might be sounding funny when she barbs and says- 'Tere muh mein guh' or 'dafa kar in rajey rujjo ko' in 'Khoobsurat', but is that what we would want the talented actress to do in all her movies? No doubt Kirron Kher has played her part exceptionally well in 'Khoobsurat' and is one big reason why people should go and watch the movie. But is the veteran actress only going to seek solace in such motormouth Punjabi mommy role?
What if she would have played Ratna Pathak's uber-sophisticated, strict mother Nirmala Devi role in 'Khoobsurat'? It would certainly have been more fun to see her bossing around and yet being coy.
Here are Kirron Kher's one-liner from 'Khoobsurat'.
