The coming Gowri festival will bring twice as much joy to Devamma, who will turn 115 on Tuesday.
A resident of Hemmane village near Kodlipet, Devamma is one of the few centenarians in the taluk. When this correspondent spoke to her on Saturday, she spoke about having the privilege of seeing five generations of her family. Owing to poverty, Devamma did not go to school and has been subsisting on the old age pension she receives from the government.
While her eyesight is not very good, Devamma can walk on her own without help.
Hailing from Mallipatna in Arakalgud taluk, Devamma was born in 1897. She married Basavaiah of Hemmane in 1919 and has been living in the same house ever since.
They have only one daughter Nagamma (85). Nagamma is married Obaiah of Chikka Bhandara near Kodlipet and they have eight girls and four boys, all of whom are married and well-settled.
While Basavaiah passed away in 1961, her son-in-law Obaiah died in 2010. Nagamma now stays with Devamma and together they take care of a paddy field. Their family has more than 100 members, the youngest being one-year-old. Nagaraj, Devamma’s neighbour says that she is the only centenarian in all the neighbouring villages.
