Inaugurating the celebrations Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash said that Sree Narayana Guru envisaged a revolution to help evolve a social system based on human virtues and not something to be misinterpreted. He said that it was time for reviewing the ideals of the Guru. “Our society had fallen into abysmal depths destroying the sanctity of the relationships. Media reports of an aged mother seeking shelter on the Thiruvonam day has been an eye opener,” he said. Sivagiri Dharam Sangham Trust president Swami Prakashananda presided over the meeting. A Samapth MP, Swami Sookshmananda, Varkala Kahar MLA,  Varkala municipal chairman Soorya Prakash were also present at the meeting. Trust secretary Rithambarananda welcomed the gathering and  Amayannur Gopi proposed a vote of thanks. Earlier in the day, special prayers and poojas were held at the Maha Samadhi of the Guru. Swami Prakashananda hoisted the flag. Swami Amrithananda lighted the ceremonial lamp. Swami Parananda inaugurated the  Japayagnam to be continued till the Maha Samadhi day.  In the evening, a cultural procession was held propagating the Guru’s message. The procession taken out from the Maha Samadhi took a round through the Varkala town and returned by 10.30 pm.   Varkala Kahar said that efforts had been taken to announce part of Varkala town as environment-friendly zone. As part of this, trees will be planted on banks of the TS Canal also starting from the mouth of the Tunnel to the Thoduve bridge.  Kahar said that if Sivagiri Mutt authorities asked the government to plant more trees on the land owned by the Mutt  it would also be undertaken by the Forest Department.  An avenue road will be constructed from the Mutt to Narayana Gurukulam using the MLA fund, he said.first published:September 01, 2012, 12:49 ISTlast updated:September 01, 2012, 12:49 IST
