Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court on Friday ordered a CID probe into the custodial death of Shwetang Patel who was detained on August 25. The youth was picked up by the police following clashes with a police.
According to postmortem reports, Patel’s death took place due to a head injury. The court also ordered Bapu Nagar police station to record an FIR into the custodial killing of the youth.
The court order states that CID crime should investigate the case and an officer outside the Bapu nagar police station jurisdiction has been asked to conduct an inquiry and submit to CID. A Magisterial inquiry has also been ordered by the court.
Violence had broken out in parts of Gujarat on Tuesday as the economically dominant Patel community held a huge protest demanding Other Backward Class (OBC) status. Several protestors were lathicharged and arrested for violence. The , Patel alleged a "political conspiracy against a peaceful movement".
Clashes had taken place between police and members of Patel community after a mega rally was organised The members of Patel community held a rally led by their 22-year leader Hardik Patel on Tuesday in Ahmedabad demanding their inclusion into the OBC category.
Even as Hardik demanded action against policemen who allegedly targeted the protestors, he claimed that they were protesting peacefully.
Asserting that Patidars were not responsible for the violence on Tuesday night, Patel hit out at the police for its action, saying, "We were treated like terrorists, and violence broke out only after police mercilessly beat up the protestors."
