New Delhi: There is a ray of hope for 17 Indians sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates for killing a Pakistani man.
India is seeking consular access to the 17 Indians saying all legal help will be provided to them.
Minister for Overseas affairs, Vayalar Ravi told CNN-IBN that Indian consulate is trying to verify the charges against the accused and will extend all possible help to them.
"I have given directions to my secretary, my staff to be in touch with the Consular General to gain access, to see that all possible legal assistance is given to file an appeal and to appoint a lawyer for the case. It doesn't mention the names of those convicted. Consular access will be gained today (Tuesday) or tomorrow, most likely today. We'll do our best to save Indians even though they committed a crime that is not defensible," Ravi told CNN-IBN on phone from Thrissur.
Indian Consul General in Dubai, Sanjay Verma, confirmed that they would be meeting the 17 Indians on death row.
"Indian diplomats will meet the 17 Indians today. They will get a first hand account of what transpired following that we will decide on what legal options to pursue. Appeal has to be filed in 15 days and will be heard in Abu Dhabi," said Verma.
Sharjah's Shariah Court had sentenced the 17 men for killing a Pakistani and injuring three others in a vicious attack last year.
The attack took place after a fight over the control of illegal liquor business in Al Sajaa area of Sharjah.
The victim had died of his wounds after he was stabbed repeatedly and also suffered brain damage.
All the convicted Indian men are aged between 17 and 30 years.
