BHUBANESWAR: Alarmed over dipping performance of students in all India examinations, the Higher Education Department has asked the colleges to get down to the business of reviewing their own performance and set academic targets. All the colleges have been directed to opt for weekly review of their departments and fix responsibility on the errant faculty members. “It is a matter of great concern that students from the State fail to put up good performance at competitive examinations at national level. Data analysis of the past decade reveals that only a few students qualify for IIT, IIIT, JEE (Engineering and Medical), entrance tests of reputed Indian universities, NISER, GRE, TOEFEL and other such competitions,” a letter to the Principals of all colleges - - government, aided, non-aided and autonomous - stated. The Department said, an objective analysis will point out the lacunae in modalities of teaching or in adoption of syllabi for which remedial measures must be started from the Principals’ side. Besides taking errant faculty members to task, a weekly checking of the progress of the syllabi by maintaining a register and a lesson plan has also be suggested. The colleges have been directed to ensure that all faculty members are engaged in 25 classes per week including official, remedial, doubt clearing and extra classes. Going by the mood of the Department, the students too will come under more scrutiny as the weekly unit tests have now been prescribed. Regular unit tests at the college level for 20 marks will have to be conducted every week and the results sent to guardians either through a hard copy, Internet or SMS. Faculty members too have been asked to record the attendance of the students and prepare absentee statement by the end of the month to be sent to the parents. “Parents of the students securing less than 75 per cent attendance should be intimated that their wards are barred from appearing in the respective annual examination,” the letter said. Talented students in Science classes will be spotted and subjected to rigorous special coaching. Besides, at the beginning of all academic sessions, all principals will have to prepare an academic excellence plan which must be achieved. Similarly, autonomous colleges have been asked to review their syllabi for different streams at least once every three years and revise it as per UGC norms. Those which have adopted semester systems will have to conduct at least two mid-term examinations and a final test.
