In a tragic incident, a good Samaritan, who tried to save his neighbour’s life after he found her hanging from the fan in her house in Thirumullaivoyal, plunged to his own death in front of a speeding train at Avadi on Monday. Police suspect that neighbours’ taunts forced the youth to take the extreme step.

It was around 2 pm on Sunday that Karthik (23), a resident of TNHB Colony in Ayyapakkam, came down from his flat to pick up his bike. He worked in an automotive components manufacturing company in Padi and was a part-time engineering student. When the youth looked through the window of the ground floor flat, he saw his neighbour S Harini, a first year mechanical engineering student in a Poonamalle college, hanging from the fan, with a dupatta around her neck. In an attempt to resuce her, he tried to open the front door. Finding it locked, he entered the house through the back door.

Harini’s father Shanmugham ran a small automobile parts manufacturing unit and he and his wife Leela had gone to visit their elder daughter Vidya, who got married recently and stayed in Thuraipakkam, investigating officer Dharani Bai told Express. “The youth claimed that he looked through the window of Shanmugham’s house because he heard a sound coming from inside,” the officer said.

Karthik called Shanmugham, informed him about his daughter and then summoning an ambulance, rushed the girl to a local hospital. Meanwhile, Shanmugham’s brother, who lived nearby, arrived at the hospital, where the doctors told him that Harini was dead.

Thirumullaivoyal police registered a case under Section 174 and began investigation.

During inquiry, Harini’s mother told the police that her daughter was worried about her performance in a computer science examination held on September 21. “Harini was the only female student in the class and her classmates seemed to have told her not to compare herself with them,” the police officer said.

As a result, she suffered from anxiety and could have resorted to suicide, she added.

The sad story did not end there. Karthik was questioned by the police later. “We asked him only casually what happened,” the sub-inspector said.

However, his neighbours appeared to have pulled him up for not calling the police as soon as he found the girl and taking her to the hospital all by himself. Karthik defended himself by saying that had he waited for the police precious minutes would have been lost, the sub-inspector said.

But the neighbours’ taunts appeared to have weighed on the youth’s mind. On Monday morning, his body was found on the track at Annanur railway station. The Avadi railway police are investigating the case. Sub-inspector Dharani Bai said they were also probing whether there was any love affair between the two victims. It was unlikely because the victim’s elder sister had a love marriage. So, the girl’s father could not have objected to their relationship. “In fact, he was full of praise for the boy’s character,” she said.
