PUDUCHERRY: Leaders of the local CPI unit met Union Home Minister Chidambaram, on Tuesday, to request him to initiate action to grant sufficient funds sought by the state government for the relief work. In a memorandum submitted to the Home Minister, state unit secretary Na Ra Kalainathan said the Cyclone Thane devastated the region and caused untold miseries to the people and added that the livelihood of fishermen had been affected following the destruction of fishing boats and equipment.He said thousands were rendered homeless and rural workers were rendered jobless.Agriculture was hit and paddy, sugarcane, banana, coconut plantations were destroyed and age-old trees at the botanical garden were uprooted, Kalainathan said and urged the Home Minister to grant sufficient funds for the state.CPI leaders, national council member R Viswanathan, party treasurer A M Salim and AITUC leader V S Abhshegam were with Kalainathan when he met the Union Minister.
