Kozhikode: The body of a nine-year-old girl, studying in the fourth standard, was recovered from her neighbour's house where it was found tied in a sack and dumped beneath logs of wood at Cherandathur near here on Tuesday, police said.

It was not known immediately if the girl Shahana was killed after an attempt was made to sexually assault her as the body bore injury marks, the sources said.

Shahana, studying at the Cherandathur LP school in Vatakara taluk, was reported missing since the lunch break at 11.45 am and the school teachers and other students soon began a search

After her slippers were traced at her neighbour Mayin Kutty's house half-an-hour later, with the help of locals they conducted a thorough search of the house, police said, adding her body was then traced beneath wooden logs adjacent to the kitchen.

A piece of cloth was found around her neck which led to the suspicion that Shahana might have been killed while raising an alarm when reportedly subjected to sexual assault, police said.

However, it could be ascertained only after the post-mortem was conducted tomorrow, they said.

Meanwhile, locals, who gathered in large numbers in front of Mayin Kutty's house as soon as the news spread, caught him from the area and later handed him over to the police.

A murder case had been lodged pending the post-mortem report, they added.
