Srinagar: Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest on Wednesday.
According to the police officials, Geelani was put under house arrest as a precautionary measure.
A spokesman for the HC Aiyaz Akbar said that a large number of police personnel have been deployed outside Geelani’s Hyderpora residence since early Wednesday morning.
He said a senior police officer informed Geelani that he cannot leave his home until further orders.
Akbar added that Geelani and other senior leaders of the HC were scheduled to visit Handwara where 21 students of a local school had died in boat tragedy on Tuesday.
"They were to go there to express their sympathy with the bereaved families as people of entire Kashmir are shocked on this tragic incident," he said, adding that Geelani’s house arrest was most unfortunate.
