KATTAPPANA: The ganja mafia which once made Idukki its safe haven has shifted its operation to other states thanks to the intensified checking by the officials concerned.
The ganja seizure in Kumily last week gives clear indication that the mafia has made operational bases in remote areas of the neighbouring states.According to a top Excise official, Idukki was a safe haven for ganja mafia for a long time. After the checking by the Excise and Forest officials intensified, ganja mafia shifted its base to remote areas in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and the other northern states.

The ganja seized from Kumily last week was brought from Andhra Pradesh. The ganja lobby has links with all the major political parties in other states which offer them assistance so that the ganja plantations are protected, it is learnt.

The checking is also being carried out on various forest routes in the border areas.The ganja is being sold to agents in major cities of the state like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

The Excise Department has already alerted other states about the mafia operation in their respective areas.
