ERODE: Expressing reservations over the stringent provisions laid down by the Food Security and Standards Act, 2006, the Tamil Nadu Hotels Association (TNHA) on Sunday said it will further increase the price of food items in eateries. On the sidelines of an association meeting here, TNHA state secretary R Srinivasan told Express that the hotels were required to prepare food using water that had the same quality of bottled water. Also the Act laid down conditions for using water for other purposes. “Only 1.5 per cent of the water available in the country is up to the mark. The rest should be purified. As the hotels have to install reverse osmosis plants to get quality water, it will naturally increase the cost of production. We will have no option, but to pass on the burden to the customers,” he said. The Act has exempted vegetables, but had laid down norms on quality of other products. The Act is applicable to all types of food caterers — from three-star hotels to roadside eateries – and the punishment is the same.
