At least four terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police sources.
“Contact established at Frisal Chinnigam area in Kulgam district. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, an army personnel, who was injured during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Kulgam district, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Saturday.
According to police, an exchange of fire between security forces and militants followed a search and cordon operation in Modergam after two to three militants were detected in the area.
Earlier this year on June 9, terrorists opened fire at a 53-seater bus, which was on its way from the Shiv Khori temple to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a deep gorge near the Teryath village of the Poni area of Reasi. The bus was ferrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. As many as nine people died in the attack.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, calling it a part of a malicious scheme to disrupt peace in the region.
