Four idols were found when the package was opened. “Officials initially suspected that it might be smuggled idols,” said a source, adding that this was a result of the arrest of idol smuggler, Subhash Chandra. “They wanted to call in the idol wing and alert police, but some staff members identified that the idols were made of black granite,” the source added.Though the passenger who abandoned idols of Hindu gods - Hanuman, Perumal, Amman and Vinayaka - remained untraced, officials suspected that it might have been left by someon who didn’t want to pay for extra luggage. “It weighed almost 40 kg and would cost a lot to take onboard international flights as extra baggage,” said a source.
