Four persons have been arrested in connection with the stone pelting incident in which a Vinayagar idol was damaged during a procession here on Sunday night.
The incident took place at Marakkadai when a few Hindu organisations were taking out a procession carrying a Vinayagar idol. Following this tension gripped the area as Hindu organisations staged a road roko demanding the arrest of the miscreants.
Acting on a complaint, the Variety Hall Road police arrested M Salman, Abbas alias Kattuvasi Abbas, Jafar, and Ismail. “We have booked them under various sections for unlawful assembly, assault, damaging public property and creating communal tension,” said Variety Hall Inspector T H Ganesan.
Following the incident, activists belonging to various Hindu outfits thronged the city police office on Monday and staged a sit-in demanding action against those indulging in vandalism of idols and to provide adequate protection for Chathurthi processions.
Police commissioner A K Viswanathan, who held talks with representatives of the agitators, assured of appropriate action on the accused.
The police have enhanced security in various localities where Vinayagar idols have been installed.
Collector M Karunakaran, addressing a communal harmony meeting, explained various conditions laid for the Chathurthi processions.
